The closed cup has the problem of having a limited bass frequency response; without a port to allow some compression (sound) to escape, lower frequency sound production may not be acceptable. Low frequencies are not adequately represented by headphones for a variety of reasons, some of which are inherent in their design. Simple mathematics dictates that a larger cone is required to produce lower frequency sounds, and that a longer distance is required for them to form the lowest audible frequencies are several feet long.
